Agenda 2063: Is Africa on Track to Meet Its Own Promises?

Agenda 2063 was born from a bold ambition: that by the centenary of the Organisation of African Unity, Africa would be a peaceful, prosperous continent where citizens live in dignity and opportunity. The 50-year blueprint set out 20 goals and 170 national targets covering everything from GDP per capita to gender equality and intra-African trade.

The Wins

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is the standout achievement. When fully operational, it will create the world's largest free trade area by number of countries, with a combined GDP of $3.4 trillion. Intra-African trade, long suppressed by colonial-era infrastructure and regulations, is beginning to grow.

Mobile money adoption — not a formal Agenda 2063 target but deeply connected to financial inclusion goals — has exceeded any projection made in 2013. Africa now leads the world in mobile payments by penetration, with M-Pesa, MTN MoMo, and their successors changing how money moves across the continent.

The Gaps

Manufacturing remains stubbornly low as a share of GDP. Africa still exports raw materials and imports finished goods — the same structural trap that held the continent back in the post-independence era. Infrastructure gaps remain enormous. Political instability in the Sahel and elsewhere is reversing development gains that took decades to achieve.
