East Africa Road Trip: Nairobi to Serengeti in 7 Days

The overland route from Nairobi to the Serengeti is one of Africa's great journeys. It passes through Kenyan highlands carpeted in tea, down into the Great Rift Valley, across the Masai Mara at the height of the wildebeest migration, over the Tanzania border at Isibania, and into the Serengeti's endless golden plains. In seven days, you can do the whole thing. Here's how.

Day 1-2: Nairobi

Start in Nairobi with at least two days — the city is underestimated. Visit the Giraffe Centre for a morning, the Karen Blixen Museum if you know Out of Africa, and the Nairobi National Park for the surreal experience of watching lions against a city skyline. Book your 4WD vehicle here — a reliable company with a decent-quality Land Cruiser or similar is non-negotiable for this route.

Day 3-4: Masai Mara

The drive southwest from Nairobi takes about five hours. The Masai Mara is Kenya's most famous wildlife reserve and justifiably so — the density of predators and prey is extraordinary year-round, peak season (July-October, the migration) is genuinely one of the great wildlife spectacles on earth. Stay at one of the smaller camps outside the main reserve for better value and more intimate experience.

Day 5: The Border Crossing

The Isibania border crossing between Kenya and Tanzania is low-key by East African standards. Allow two hours. Your guide will handle the paperwork. Once in Tanzania, the landscape immediately shifts — more open, more golden, quieter. You'll reach the Serengeti's Western Corridor by late afternoon.

Day 6-7: The Serengeti

The Serengeti deserves its reputation. At 14,750 square kilometers, it contains the largest concentration of migrating animals on earth. Dawn drives are essential — the light at 6am in the Serengeti, watching the plain come alive, is an experience that stays with you permanently. Fly back to Nairobi from the Serengeti's small airstrip rather than driving — saves eight hours and costs less than you'd expect.
